John and Will recorded the short loop that starts at 1:49 several years ago. The trumpet melody was soon added, but it took a couple more years for Will to come up with the melancholy lyrics that complete this song.
lyrics
This is as close to a thank-you card
As you'll ever get from me
It's not the path's fault
It didn't take you where you wanted to go
It takes you home
Nothing I wrote
was ever enough
Nothing conveyed
what I wanted to feel
So this thank-you card's
left in its envelope
When do I get
to be one of those
