about
The idea for this song came out of a recurring dream Will had as a child. Late at night, he's asleep in the backseat of his parents' black Oldsmobile, racing through the New Mexico high desert. He wakes to find the car stopped and his family gone. He steps out of the car and begins walking along the highway, whistling a tune to tamp down his fear, the car's headlights slowly fading behind him.
lyrics
The headlights stretch out in front of me
I'm walking along the highway
Listening to the sound of the gravel crunching
And the music in my head
[whistling]
CHORUS:
Low whistle
Hank whispers in my ear
Walk slowly
Walk slowly down that lonesome path
And I'll follow you
Then there's no more fear
There's just one contrary chance
I remember
Sailing slowly through the night
To the most gentle landing
I can imagine
Then we're not moving
It's just me stretched out
And the steel guitar
And the low whistle
And Hank is whispering
Whispering in my ear
Walk slowly down
Walk slowly down that lonesome path
And the devil is crunching beneath my feet
And the headlights follow while the car retreats
CHORUS:
Low whistle
Hank whispers in my ear
Walk slowly down
Walk slowly down that lonesome path
And I'll follow you
Then there's no more fear
There's just one contrary chance
One contrary chance
