This is another song inspired by the landscape of New Mexico, specifically the Salinas Pueblo Missions. The first half of the song takes place in the present; it's about having a date in the ruins of one of the pueblos. The second half of the song takes place in the mid-17th century and is a Spansh missionary's description of his last desperate days at the pueblo.
lyrics
VERSE I:
Footfalls on the flagstone floor
Sunlight on the mission door
Another stunning Sunday
Mammoth walls fallen down
Plaster and dados gone
Where high retablos reigned
now only ruins remain
VERSE II:
Following after you
Finding things we both like to do
It's such a joy to get into you
I've said a lot of things
None of which I believe
Except when I say what you bring to me
CODA:
The heathen kill
all newly converted
that they can find
But many starve first
upon the trail
Our mission fails
all around us
...Still they have faith
no evil shall rise
through the square kiva roof
